Remembering Humanity’s Superpower

I recently had the privilege of holding my first in-person Reiki session with a friend. Sharing this practice is immensely important to me, and I had put a lot of pressure on myself in preparation for her arrival. I was racing around, turning on humidifiers, lighting incense, and brewing tea when I remembered something my Reiki teacher Lisa Guyman shared: “Your power is in your presence.” Realizing I was existing in a fictional future I created in my head, I decided to return to the present and take a belly breath.

That’s when I remembered, oh yeah, this isn’t brain surgery - it's Reiki.

I realized there is no right way of how this “should” go and there was no way of doing it wrong, so what was I worried about. This didn’t need to be anything more than two friends sharing space amongst healing energy. It could be what ever we decided it would be. We could create a unique experience together.

And we did - and it was beautiful. It was healing. It was illuminating. It was all the things I was ever meant to be. Two people’s ideas comfortably filled the space that one had been attempting to clutter earlier.

By sharing in creation of the experience, we each got exactly what we needed out of it. She experienced an environment that facilitated welcoming of transformative energy, and I received competence through confidence. The beauty of co-creation is that it can do nothing but serve the highest good of the creators.

Co-creation is about authenticity and empathy. It's about recognizing that there are no right or wrong ways of doing anything—only the ways that resonate with our true selves or don’t. It’s about inviting each other in. It’s about pulling up another seat at the table. It’s about wanting the highest good for others as much as you want it for yourself.

As Homo sapiens, we possess this remarkable ability to choose our thoughts and share ideas, leading to the generation of unique and catalytic shared experiences. Our thoughts drive the things that we say, do, and feel in our lives and the lives of others. This power sets us apart from all other forms of life and empowers us to shape our reality in profound ways.

Free will refers to our freedom to choose. Our body and the multitude of electrical and chemical signals coursing throughout it will make all the choices necessary over the course of a lifetime, all without input from our higher reasoning or our connection centers. Allowing our physical bodies to take the wheel forfeits our indelible power as humans to shape our shared reality.

As the great poet once said, “With great power comes great responsibility,” (right?) and today I invite you to consider how responsible you are being with your power. No matter what entities ever try to convince you otherwise, through co-creation, we all have the power to shape a reality that is inclusive, compassionate, and abundant for each and every one of us.
